The shooting happened when Troop J's Criminal Investigation Unit was conducting a search "pertaining to an ongoing armed robbery investigation and was to be executed on multiple storage units" at 629 East Fulton Street in Lancaster City at 6:19 a.m., Grothey detailed in a release.
Before beginning the search, "After Troopers announced their presence and intentions to execute a search warrant," Grothey explained in an updated release.
The PSP Corporal assigned to the Special Emergency Response Team was among the law enforcement members using "various tools to attempt to breach the storage units," as stated in an updated release.
"when a suspect opened fire and shot him in the arm," Grothey said, adding that, "the Corporal suffered a non-life-threatening bullet wound to his arm and was transported to Lancaster General Hospital."
The shot came from 40-year-old Alfredo Maldonado-Gonzalez who was inside one of the units they were searching, according to the updated release. After he had been taken into custody without further incident, a stolen gun was found in the unit.
"No shots were fired by law enforcement involved in this incident," Grothey said.
Maldonado-Gonzalez had a preliminary arraignment on charges of Attempted Criminal Homicide of a Law Enforcement Officer, Aggravated Assault, Assault on Law Enforcement, Discharge of a Firearm into an Occupied Structure, Possession of a Firearm, Recklessly Endangering, according to PSP, court documents for this case were unavailable at the time of publishing.
The Troop J Major Case Team is investigating this shooting.
The Corporal's condition is stable and they are expected to make a full recovery.
